About Us

In 1976, recognizing a need to diversify an economy based almost solely on tourism and real estate, a group of community leaders came together to create the Economic Development Council of Collier County.

Over thirty years later, real progress has been made in creating clean, high wage jobs, particularly in the high tech and healthcare sectors. In fact, more than 100 companies and 6,000 jobs have been assisted by the EDC through a vital private-public partnership with Collier County Government formed in 1997.

Still, the recent severe economic downturn proves that there is still much work to be done. In fact, the need to diversify our economy is more urgent than ever, as even a full recovery likely will not restore the County's traditional economic engines to their former strength.

With this in mind, the Economic Development Council is launching "PROJECT INNOVATION - Economy Building for Collier County," an exploration into economic innovation and productivity, and how we can create a prosperous and sustainable business community in Collier County. This initiative will drive the change we need to assure economic prosperity into the future.

State Representative Tom Grady, Regional Business Alliance Chairman Dolph von Arx and Naples Daily News Publisher and President Chris Doyle have stepped up as Honorary Chairmen of this critical program, and Lieutenant Governor Jeff Kottkamp will endorse Project Innovation at a special luncheon on January 8th, 2009. Consisting of five components, Project Innovation will identify the means of creating a culture that will attract high wage employees and an environment that will support world class employees. The process will focus on bringing community-wide consensus on the importance of economy-building, a step needed to enable substantive change; fostering creativity in identifying new opportunities, an approach needed to develop a sustainable economy; and collaboration on delivering needed resources and initiatives, a strategy needed to put ideas into action.. It will result in a specific, actionable plan to build a healthy economic foundation for current and future generations.

Given participation, ideas and support from people throughout Collier County, PROJECT INNOVATION will put the means of building our economy in our hands. We encourage you to join us in this urgent initiative. The future of our County hangs in the balance.
